This was the work that I made for my GIP* in high school. I was studying
Applied Visual Arts. The assignment started with a general theme,
'symbiosis' which was decided by our teachers. Everyone in our class had
to start from the same theme. With symbiosis as a starting point, we had
to research this topic for an entire semester. This way everyone created
a different approach to the general theme. Eventually, we ended up with
our own, individual topic to make our work around. I chose to work
around prosthetics and their symbiotic relationship with the body.
The thought behind my work is that prosthetics will never be the same as
the body parts they replace. This is why people often make prosthetics
cooler than the body parts. I apply this principle to broken furniture.
I take this idea even further by giving the prosthetics an extra
function, like lamps.

Prosthetics that deserve to be seen
(Protheses die gezien mogen worden)
is an installation of once-broken, wooden furniture. It consists of 5
pieces that have been given a prosthetic: a little side table, a garden
chair, a large coffee table, a little table and another chair.
*Kunststukken means 'art pieces' or 'artificial pieces'

* 'GIP' or 'Geïntegreerde Proef' literally means 'intigrated
examination'. It's a final project in Belgian high schools.

In my quest for broken furniture, I decided to visit the ‘Kringwinkel’ a
second-hand retail chain in Belgium. Of course, they don’t sell severely
damaged items, but I wanted to ask if I could look at the broken
furniture they inevitably receive from people. This, disappointingly,
was not allowed, but after strolling around the store I stumbled across
this side table. The table was technically still usable, but it had
clearly undergone a poor attempt at repair after the top broke off from
the base. It was barely holding on. I removed the base and replaced it
with my construction pipes I extended the pipe to go through the table
and placed a lamp on top.

In my desperation while searching for the furniture, my mother and I
posted on our social media platforms that we were searching for
furniture that had been broken. One of my mom’s old colleagues replied,
saying she had some broken garden chairs that she wanted to throw away.
We drove to her house and she and my mom had a little reunion. After
that, I got to choose a chair that seemed interesting for my project and
I chose this one. The chair had a broken leg and the seat was missing
some slats. I replaced these with one continuous pipe construction.

This table was by far the easiest piece to find. It was the only item in
this collection that I found in my house. It used to be part of my
sister’s bedroom a long time ago. It ended up broken in our shed, ready
to be cut up and burned in our fireplace. I have been asking everyone in
my family about the origin of this table, but somehow no one knows. The
table had been standing in our shed for quite some time, it had two
broken legs and was overall very unstable. Again, I used a continuous
pipe construction that replaced the two legs and ended in an overhanging
lamp.

As anyone would do when looking for old things, I went to my
grandparents. And I was right to do so. My grandfather has a huge attic
with an absurd amount of random things from his theater play, including
this broken table hidden behind some boxes with wigs and ties. One of
the legs had broken off, leaving the table very unstable. I put a long
construction pipe straight through the tabletop, replacing the missing
leg. I made the pipe very long, so it perfectly completes the
composition of the installation.

The last piece of my collection is another chair. This one was given to
me by one of my art teachers, ‘meneer Wouters’. He asked me how my GIP
was going and after explaining to him how unbelievably hard it was to
find suitable broken furniture, he invited me to take a look at some of
his broken chairs. Among his broken garden chairs, this one caught my
eye.
As you can see, this piece is different from the others. It was indeed
broken, but it dit not have any missing parts. The chair was cracked
through the middle of the seat. I fixed this by wrapping lashing straps
around the seat. Later, I turned the loose ends into a magazine holder.
